Nestled in the picturesque Chilterns AONB, this new residence – standing at an impressive 4,000ft² – enjoys breathtaking views of the surrounding open countryside. Commissioned by our client to replace a rather unremarkable 1000ft² bungalow, we set to create a traditional family home that seamlessly integrates with the unique site and its environs.
Our partnership with local Planning consultants, JPPC, facilitated a strategic approach that resulted in the successful approval of a replacement residence four times its original size. In navigating this sensitive location, as ever, our design approach was marked by a deep respect for the local context - and in embracing an architectural language firmly rooted in the regional vernacular, we succeeded in delivering a replacement dwelling that harmoniously blends into the setting.
The essence of the property’s character emanates from a simple, honest building form, with meticulous attention paid to construction detail and the selection of premium materials. True to the local vernacular, well-proportioned window openings with panels of knapped flint and handmade red, artfully-placed brick detailing, including arched lintels, quoining, plinth, and banding, all beneath a plain clay-tiled roof, coalesce into a timeless composition.
Collaborating closely with HÁM Interiors, a classic, country character for the internal spaces was curated throughout. A welcoming entrance hallway and distinctive staircase lead to the principal living spaces, featuring a formal sitting room, snug, study, and a spacious open-plan kitchen / family / dining room. The first floor accommodates five generously-sized double bedrooms, served by a gallery landing illuminated by a large roof lantern. The master suite boasts a covered balcony with a glazed balustrade, offering uninterrupted views across the fields directly from the bed.
