We were commissioned to design a contemporary residential development to replace a dilapidated garage and retail unit located in the heart of Wheatley Village, Oxfordshire. This unusual site fronts onto two important roads and therefore presented an opportunity to significantly improve the visual appearance of the area with a single development. Our bespoke design divided the accommodation into two apartment buildings, the larger of which consists of seven apartments and overlooks London Road, and the second smaller block contains two apartments and overlooks Church Road to the south.
The contemporary flat roof form of the buildings offered the practice design flexibility, ensuring the maximum marketable floor areas for each apartment. Furthermore the flat roofs guaranteed a low building profile, so as not to negatively impact the neighbouring properties. The sharp, sleek contemporary form of each building has been softened to complement its semi-rural village setting. The subtle cream render and rustic brickwork create a visual tie to the neighbouring properties and set an architectural paradigm for further modern developments.
