Planning Permission | Contemporary Apartment Development

May 24

We’re thrilled to announce consent for this contemporary apartment development, situated on the prominent Oxford Road, in central Kidlington. Replacing a tired and unremarkable commercial building – which did little to enhance the street scene – the consented scheme offers a high-quality architectural solution, delivering an attractive and interesting building that beautifully assimilates in scale and form into the locality, ensuring compatibility with neighbouring structures and preserving existing amenity and privacy, while securing an uplift of 181% to the original floor area for our client.

Following a carefully managed design and planning process, placing particular emphasis on crafting a response to the surrounding architectural context, whist remaining modest and sympathetic in manner, the resultant design delivers a discerning development of six, two-bedroom apartments, each with private balcony or terrace – designed to sit recessed within the building envelope, and featuring perforated brick panels to act as privacy screens to the adjacent sites – in addition to shared amenity spaces, bike storage and private parking.

The composition of the main, three storey form, is intentionally simple. A contemporary interpretation of projecting brickwork detailing, and large areas of glazing are carefully articulated across the elevations. The brick facade uses a mixture of smooth and textured finishes, and intricately designed bespoke brick detailing, to add interest and balanced richness to the primary elevation. This project showcases a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern brickwork detailing, setting a new modern vernacular in this area of Kidlington.

We’re pleased to have been involved in a development that aligns with local regeneration efforts, offering modern residences within Kidlington's diverse street scene. Securing planning permission for this development marks a significant milestone in the journey to revitalise the area and leave a lasting positive impact on the community. Many thanks, as ever, to all involved - Tetra Tech, AA Environmental Ltd, Evoke Transport, Forge Engineering Design Solutions and Paddock Geo Engineering Ltd.
