Planning Permission | Contemporary Homes Within a Former Quarry

October 26

Having secured planning permission earlier this year, we're pleased to see construction progressing at NOMAD's distinctive residential development, The Quarry, within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Set within a former quarry, the development of three contemporary farmhouse residences has been shaped by a landscape that is both distinctive and demanding. Steeply sloping terrain, mature vegetation and the enclosed nature of the site presented a series of complex design considerations, requiring the architecture to work with the land rather than against it.

Drawing inspiration from the site's industrial past and its gradual return to nature, the homes are anchored by robust stone plinths that reference the exposed quarry face, while timber-clad upper volumes establish a visual connection with the woodland canopy beyond. The material palette is intentionally restrained, combining natural materials and carefully considered detailing to allow the character of the landscape to remain the defining feature.

Rather than repeating a single house type, each dwelling has been individually designed in response to its position within the site. Variations in form, massing and roof profile create a more varied and dynamic composition, while a consistent approach to materials and detailing ensures a cohesive architectural language across the development. Particular care has been taken to shape the relationship between the homes, responding sensitively to the site's challenging topography whilst enhancing privacy, outlook and the quality of the living environment. Each home has been carefully positioned to maximise natural light and strengthen its connection to the surrounding landscape.

Working alongside NOMAD's carefully considered interior vision, the homes have been shaped as a cohesive response to both place and lifestyle, bringing together architecture, landscape and interior design to create highly considered living environments suited to contemporary country living. The result is a development that embraces the uniqueness of the former quarry, drawing its character from the site's history, landscape and contours to create homes that feel intrinsically connected to their surroundings.
