We had the great fortune of revisiting this distinguished Arts & Crafts inspired house – located in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – more than ten years after work originally commenced with our former Property Developer client. The new owners – who purchased the property a couple of years back, after making the move from London – kindly welcomed us in to photograph the house for our portfolio.
Creatively designed to maximise the gently sloped setting, natural light and verdant views through the grounds, this high-quality, low impact statement property – which replaces a former run-down chalet bungalow of unremarkable appearance – provides unrivalled comfort and style, while sensitively responding to, and assimilating within, its context.
Working with local Planning Consultants, @JPPC Chartered Town Planners – back in 2011 – a carefully considered Planning strategy was developed to increase the level of accommodation from the existing modest footprint. The new design provides a substantial traditional house – complete with six bedrooms, multiple reception rooms and generous open-plan kitchen / garden room with full-height Crittall screens – alongside a separate, more contemporary leisure wing with indoor swimming pool, home gym and summerhouse, all with direct links to the rear landscaped gardens, including in-built barbecue and covered seating areas.
As part of the overall Master Plan, the original ill-conceived access drive was repositioned to align with the new house, which makes for a dramatic entrance sequence, particularly when brought to life by Darklight Design’s beautiful lighting scheme, at night. A carefully considered palette of high-quality materials – including locally sourced bricks by HG Matthews, a striking cantilevered stone stair by local stonemasons AF Jones and expansive glazing from Cotswold Casements – elevates the design, offering an understated, elegant, and timeless aesthetic.
