Contemporary Conservation

The Limes – a dwelling of early 20th Century construction, located within one of Oxford’s prominent Conservation Areas – required a delicate design approach and careful planning negotiations to undergo a significant refurbishment, re-fenestration, and extension scheme.

The family home – situated within a distinctly Arts and Crafts area, to the North of the City – required minor external works to enhance the outward appearance and street appeal of the building, taking reference from the existing house and the language of the surrounding properties.

While replacement fenestration follows an Arts and Crafts style – and with detailing and glazing bars to ensure integration within the vernacular – the new extension elements play a more subtle, contemporary role, introducing a clean, frameless, and slimline design maximising views to a unique south facing walled garden.

An open-plan and contemporary design approach sought to rationalise internal areas, following continued alteration and extensions through the last century, whilst a single storey, South-facing extension to the rear of the property, provides a generous kitchen by Bulthaup, dining and family space overlooking the established gardens. The addition of a single storey side extension – replacing the former garage – creates a library and reading study, while a further extension at first floor, situated above the original single storey kitchen, provides improved bedroom accommodation.

The careful spatial planning throughout enhances the flow between key rooms, and greatly improves the proportion and quality of spaces. Anderson Orr and the client worked closely with Interior Designers to create a classic interiors scheme, and with made to measure joinery throughout from Langstaff Ellis, the final design has achieved a timeless and calming family home that epitomises conservation architecture for modern living.
