Country Estate

Contemporary Cotswold Estate

Through an extensive feasibility exercise – considering both single and multi-unit approaches – AO were able to maximise the development potential of this rural site in a Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - converting a collection of traditional, stone tythe farm buildings into separate residential units and holiday let accommodation, new on-site garaging and repurposed ancillary, storage space, respectively.

The development uses the original stone construction and existing apertures - including the large cart shed openings, that form a focal point of the residential conversion. Minimising intervention and utilising a simple palette of timber, stone and slate, the scheme is sympathetic to the vernacular and maintains the overall appearance of an agricultural building in this rural position.

AO proposed to preserve the traditional character, materials and details of the barn alongside introducing modern elements with a vaulted living area and Art Deco-inspired metal-framed bay windows that flood the space with natural light and add a complementary aesthetic that reflects the building’s contemporary use.
