Contemporary Subterranean Retreat

This stunning contemporary home - set in the heart of the South Oxfordshire countryside, not far from the market town of Thame - was designed to replace a former agricultural barn, previously consented with a somewhat restrictive Class Q conversion scheme for a five-bed dwelling.

Following a carefully managed, phased design and planning process, approval to create a new, two storey, six-bed replacement dwelling in a flat roofed contemporary style, providing accommodation commensurate with modern living, was successfully achieved.

Optimising the extensive, panoramic views of the site, while mitigating the visual impact of the house, is key to the design. Placing the dwelling within, rather than on, the landscape, and working with the levels and natural slope of the site, ensures the buildings sits well-mannered in the surrounding context.

A carefully curated palette of high quality, durable and traditional, local materials – including dark linear brick, vertical timber cladding with louvers, zinc metal cladding and gabion walling – further reflects the local vernacular and environment, beautifully complemented with large, glazed openings, delivering a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

A detailed and considered landscape design enhances the immediate gardens - and local biodiversity of the site - while offering screening between the dwelling and the surrounding context of neighbouring properties and public footpaths.
