Contemporary Vernacular Farmhouse

Located in a charming hamlet in the Berkshire countryside, this replacement farmhouse draws from the local vernacular, responding to its agrarian and equestrian context — reflecting the area’s model farms and extensive horse use, but with a contemporary twist.

Acquired with an existing, but unsuitable, approval for a replacement property — secured prior to the company’s involvement — the project was fully redesigned to reimagine the original concept and align the proposal with the client’s vision for a contemporary yet traditionally styled home, complete with a series of outbuildings.

A holistic approach to design and construction, delivered in collaboration with Barr Build, ensures a seamless blend of modern living with timeless charm and traditional craftsmanship, resulting in a residence that sits comfortably within its picturesque surroundings.

The integration of large, glazed openings optimises natural light and strengthens the connection between interior spaces and the carefully redesigned landscape, offering expansive views across the countryside. The transformation spans multiple levels, including the introduction of a new basement that enhances both functionality and flexibility.

Underpinned by a sustainable infrastructure and designed to optimise long-term performance, the scheme incorporates an air source heat pump, high-performance glazing and rainwater harvesting systems, contributing to the property’s overall efficiency and environmental responsibility. The addition of outbuildings, defined by horizontal timber boarding and natural slate roofs, further reinforces a cohesive and carefully considered architectural language.

Collectively, the project establishes a refined countryside home that balances contemporary design with the enduring qualities of rural architecture.
