Sympathetic Victorian Refurb

Situated in Bow, within a designated Conservation Area, this Victorian terrace strikes a careful balance between heritage preservation and contemporary living. Defined by ordered two-storey terraces, concealed butterfly roofs, and a refined architectural rhythm, the surrounding context is one the scheme both respects and enhances.

Appointed to sensitively refurbish and extend the property, the brief centred on elevating the home to modern living standards while honouring the integrity of its original fabric. The scheme comprises a single-storey rear infill extension, refinement of the existing ground-floor addition, reconfigured openings, and a full interior renovation, with scope for a future mansard roof extension secured under planning as part of a subsequent phase.

The resulting design centres on a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space, naturally lit by a lightweight structural glass roof that pitches back towards the main house. Slimline Crittall doors by Fabco frame views onto the landscaped garden, enhancing the sense of openness and connection between inside and out. Externally, reclaimed London Stock brickwork complements the surrounding context, and the eaves height along the boundary has been carefully considered to remain sympathetic to neighbouring amenity. The architectural language aligns with the guidance of the Conservation Area, ensuring the additions sit harmoniously within their setting.

Internally, the client’s refined sense of style informed a timeless and cohesive palette, blending traditional detailing with contemporary craftsmanship and colour. Original features have been reinstated and enhanced through bespoke joinery by Fallow Workshops, while new sash windows by Lomax + Wood Ltd and a structural glass roof by Fluid Glass introduce a lightness that carries throughout the home. Newly appointed kitchen and bathroom spaces further elevate the property’s functionality, marrying everyday comfort with period charm.

Delivered by Abbey Extensions & Renovations Ltd, the project represents a sympathetic refurbishment and extension that celebrates the home’s Victorian character while reimagining it for contemporary family life.
